Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated a significant plan to revamp 22 bus stations and depots across the city within the next three years. This initiative, reported by WAM, is aligned with RTA’s aim to bolster public transport infrastructure, making bus travel a more attractive option for daily commuters.
The project will encompass a broad range of upgrades, including the enhancement of passenger facilities, waiting areas, offices for drivers, and the addition or refurbishment of overnight parking, workshops, and maintenance areas across 16 stations and six depots. This initiative is part of a larger effort to elevate the overall travel experience, making it not just about getting from point A to point B, but also about ensuring satisfaction and convenience for every passenger.
“RTA is committed to advancing the infrastructure for public transport. This three-year project is designed with the community in mind, aiming to make public transport a preferred choice for daily travel. We’re going beyond the basic functions of bus stations, aiming to transform the travel experience by introducing a range of services that cater to passenger needs, including improved access for people with disabilities, bicycle racks, and seamless integration with Dubai Metro and taxi services,” commented Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General of RTA.
The enhancements will target nine stations in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai, including system updates, addition of prayer rooms, and rejuvenation of the exterior aesthetics. The depot improvements are set to include new inspection lanes, wash areas, drainage improvements, and comprehensive infrastructure upgrades.
Special attention is being paid to facilities for drivers, with significant upgrades planned for the Jebel Ali and Al Quoz depots. Moreover, the exterior of all stations will be equipped with new traffic signals, sidewalks, lighting, and security systems. Parking areas at five stations will undergo a redesign to improve accessibility and safety.
In 2021, RTA successfully completed several bus station projects, including those at Al Ghubaiba, Union, and Dubai International Airport Terminal 3. These stations not only serve as vital links between different modes of transport but also ensure safe and convenient access for all residents.
As part of its broader vision, RTA is focusing on creating an integrated transport system that also supports pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. This is in line with RTA’s commitment to promoting alternative and individual mobility solutions, offering residents and visitors a range of convenient, eco-friendly travel options.
