Abu Dhabi is on a mission to transform itself into a leading global destination for tourists. According to the Abu Dhabi Tourism Strategy 2030, the emirate is set to welcome 39.3 million annual visitors, create 178,000 jobs, and enhance its non-oil GDP contribution to Dh90 billion by 2030. This ambitious plan was unveiled by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, outlining a promising future for the emirate’s economy and its tourism sector.
Record Visitor Numbers in 2023
Last year, Abu Dhabi welcomed over 24 million tourists, marking a significant 30% increase from 2022. This surge contributed Dh49 billion to the GDP, showcasing a 22% growth from the previous year. The tourism industry’s vigorous expansion is paralleled by infrastructural developments, such as the opening of a state-of-the-art terminal at Zayed International Airport. This new terminal, with a capacity to host 45 million passengers and 79 aircraft simultaneously, earned the title of ‘Best Airport at Arrivals Globally’ at the 2023 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards.
Etihad Airways’ Remarkable Growth
Etihad Airways, the flagship carrier based in Abu Dhabi, reported a robust performance in February, with more than 1.4 million passengers and an 89% load factor. Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, highlighted an impressive 46% year-on-year growth. The airline has also broadened its fleet with three new 787-9s and opened additional routes to Antalya, Turkey, and Jaipur, India.
Thriving Through Seasons
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism has been proactive in attracting tourists year-round with campaigns like ‘One Summer Isn’t Enough’ and ‘Can’t Wait to Winter’, featuring an array of events catering to different interests. These efforts reflect the emirate’s commitment to offering a diverse range of attractions for every kind of traveler.
A Cultural Beacon
The Louvre Abu Dhabi emerged as a favorite among tourists, with over 1.2 million visitors last year. A significant 72% of these were international tourists, predominantly from key markets such as Russia, India, France, and more. This influx was spurred by compelling exhibitions, enhanced visitor experiences at the Children’s Museum, and engaging educational programs.
Abu Dhabi’s strategic initiatives towards enriching its tourism sector are clear indicators of its commitment to becoming a premier global destination. With continued investment in infrastructure, cultural landmarks, and strategic marketing efforts, Abu Dhabi is well on its path to achieving its ambitious 2030 goals.
