With the opening of two new bike routes, Dubai is taking a big step towards becoming a bicycle-friendly city. This is part of their aim to expand the city’s bike network to 1,000 km. By connecting important locations including Dubai Marina, Jumeirah, Al Qudra, Barsha, and Nad Al Sheba, this large-scale project hopes to improve the city’s cycling infrastructure.
Cycling routes in Al Khawaneej and Mushrif, which add 7 km to the 32 km of existing tracks in these areas, were recently launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). With this development, the total length of bicycle trails in these areas is increased to 39 km, encouraging the use of a more sustainable and healthful form of transportation.
This project is being launched during Ramadan, a time when people in the city are more likely to go outside and exercise during this holy month. Under the direction of Dubai’s Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the expansion is a part of a larger plan to establish Dubai as the best place to live by 2040.
This extension is in line with the RTA’s Master Plan and the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, which emphasise building trails specifically for bicyclists and pedestrians. The RTA seeks to enhance the quality of life by promoting cycling as a regular activity among inhabitants and visitors by creating better connections between residential areas and major attractions.
The recently inaugurated rails begin at Qur’anic Park and Mushrif Park, travel through important thoroughfares, and link to pre-existing tracks. This improvement not only improves the infrastructure for cycling but also encourages cycling as a practical and environmentally responsible form of transportation.
The RTA’s master plan calls for growing the network of bike lanes from its present 544 km to 1,000 km by 2030. By connecting coastal regions with exterior tracks through strategic districts, this expansion will meet worldwide standards while also taking into account the distinctive features of each locality.
Dubai is becoming an even more alluring city for both locals and tourists by promoting cycling as a means of achieving sustainability and better urban transportation.
