According to Architects’ Journal, Saudi Arabia is setting new architectural records by collaborating with the esteemed Foster + Partners architecture company to construct a landmark skyscraper in Riyadh that is intended to reach an astounding two kilometres into the sky. The Public Investment Fund (PIF) is supporting this ambitious project, which aims to reshape Riyadh’s skyline and push the limits of contemporary engineering and architecture.

When finished, the proposed structure will be taller than the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which now holds the record at 828 metres. This multibillion-dollar project demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s aspirational capital allocation strategy as well as its dedication to funding endeavours that stand for advancement and innovation.

Foster + Partners beat out other finalists, including the architects behind the Burj Khalifa, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), for this project. Foster + Partners has a diverse portfolio that includes multiple airport projects around Saudi Arabia. The proposed tower will improve the city’s connections and infrastructure by being situated close to King Khalid International Airport.

The engineering achievement of building a tower two kilometres high is projected to cost more than $5 billion. This project is a part of a larger plan to change the skyline of Riyadh, which is already home to famous buildings like the 302m Kingdom Centre, the 385m-tall PIF Tower, and the Burj Rafal.

Foster + Partners’ design philosophy is clear in their proposal for the new Abha Airport terminal, which places a strong emphasis on outdoor areas, human-scale structures, and connectivity. This suggests that the new skyscraper will be a feat not just of height but also of creative architectural design and communal space.

The world anxiously awaits the realisation of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious projects, which are pushing the boundaries of modern design and altering Riyadh’s urban scene while also raising the bar for skyscrapers globally.
