In 2023, Dubai’s taxi industry had impressive expansion, breaking previous records with over 198.4 million passengers served and 114 million trips facilitated year. This achievement highlights the taxi industry’s crucial position in the emirate’s extensive public transport system and represents the largest number of yearly journeys in the previous 15 years. Trips in the sector increased by 8% between 2022 and 2023, according to Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at the Public Transport Agency, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Particularly in October 2023, there was a remarkable surge in the number of taxi journeys, totaling 10 million. Known for their wide coverage, these taxis typically traverse more than 500 kilometres in a day.

The RTA’s dedication to improving Dubai’s taxi fleet is demonstrated by the 1,160 new taxis it added in 2023, increasing the overall number of cars to over 12,532. Eighty-three percent of the fleet, or 10,388 taxis, are electric and hybrid cars that are low-impact. This programme is a component of Dubai’s larger plan to encourage environmentally friendly public transportation. 27,900 drivers oversee the fleet, working in shifts to provide 24-hour coverage.

Significant growth was also recorded by Hala cab, an e-hail cab service, which had 39.8 million rides in 2023—a 27% rise from the year before. This increase indicates that more customers are using computerised booking systems. Furthermore, Hala Taxi increased the effectiveness of its services; in 2023, the average arrival time for scheduled taxis in Dubai was 3.6 minutes, down from 3.9 minutes in 2022.
