In a remarkable stride toward becoming a global tourism magnet, Saudi Arabia has outshone other major travel destinations by welcoming an unprecedented 56% more international tourists in 2023 compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019. According to a recent report from the United Nations World Tourism Barometer, this surge not only signifies the Kingdom’s successful tourism strategies but also positions it as a leader in the Middle East’s tourism recovery.
Interestingly, Saudi Arabia’s recovery rate in tourist numbers reached a formidable 156% in 2023 against the backdrop of pre-COVID levels, placing it at the vanguard of the global tourism recovery efforts. The introduction of new initiatives like the Premium Residency visas underscores the Kingdom’s ambitious plans to attract an international workforce and travelers alike, highlighting its allure as a top destination for life and work.
The Middle East, with Saudi Arabia at the helm, is the only region to have surpassed pre-COVID tourist arrival levels, achieving a 122% recovery rate. This achievement is reflective of the concerted efforts to boost the regional tourism ecosystem and diversify the economies beyond oil.
Tourism investment and infrastructure development have been pivotal in drawing both foreign and domestic travelers to Saudi Arabia’s top destinations. This significant influx has also translated into a tourism spending boom, with the figures breaching the SAR100 billion mark in just the first three quarters of 2023, as reported by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA).
As Saudi Arabia continues to navigate its path towards becoming a premier global tourism destination, the staggering growth and resilience demonstrated in 2023 indicate a bright future for the Kingdom’s travel and tourism sector.
