In a groundbreaking move, Dubai Municipality has joined forces with prominent global entities N.V.Besix S.A., Marubeni Middle East and Africa Power Limited (MAMEA), and ENOC Marketing to revolutionize waste management and usher in a new era of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. This cutting-edge project, launched at the World Governments Summit 2024, aims to leverage advanced technologies to treat a mix of municipal solid waste, organic waste, and green hydrogen from sewage treatment, marking a significant stride towards eco-friendly aviation.
As per the agreement, Dubai Municipality will ensure a steady supply of municipal solid waste daily, integrating a mix of organic waste and green hydrogen generated from sewage treatment facilities. This initiative is a testament to the UAE’s dedication to environmental sustainability, resource conservation, and the battle against climate change through innovative and strategic solutions.
The collaboration was formalized by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by senior representatives from the involved parties. Dawoud Al Hajri, the Director General of Dubai Municipality, Saif Al Falasi, ENOC’s Group CEO, Pierre Lembrechts from BESIX Middle East, and Wataru Ikushima of Marubeni Middle East and Africa Power Limited’s New Energy Business Development Department were the signatories.
This pioneering partnership is set to significantly contribute to the UAE’s sustainability goals, notably in reducing the carbon footprint of the aviation sector and positioning the nation as a global hub for low-carbon aviation fuel production. It heralds a collaborative effort involving various investors and strategic partners, aimed at achieving these ambitious objectives.
Highlighting the import of this initiative, ENOC’s Group CEO, Al Falasi, pointed out that this is a crucial milestone towards fulfilling the UAE’s goal of supplying one percent of its national airlines’ fuel requirements with locally produced SAF by 2031. This innovative approach not only aims to scale SAF production using sustainable feedstocks like municipal waste but also promotes a circular economy prioritizing recycling and resource conservation.
The signing ceremony was graced by the presence of influential figures, including Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and Abdulla Al Basti, Secretary-General of the Dubai Executive Council, underscoring the initiative’s significance to Dubai’s and UAE’s environmental and economic ambitions.
