In a significant move to safeguard intellectual property rights, the UAE’s Ministry of Economy has introduced a new and comprehensive intellectual property (IP) system. This development arrives at a time when the nation witnessed a 9.6% rise in trademark applications and a substantial increase in intellectual works registration by 29.5% over the previous year. Moreover, the Ministry noted a 19.5% increase in patent applications in 2023, with total registered patents reaching 5,108, reflecting a 13.7% growth.

The newly unveiled IP system comprises 11 pivotal initiatives across various IP fields and applications. These initiatives are designed to enhance the country’s innovation and creativity landscape, creating a nurturing environment for inventors and creators. This environment aims to transform entrepreneurial ideas into innovative business ventures and empower local talents in effectively leveraging IP applications.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, the Minister of Economy, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to aligning its intellectual property sector with global best practices. He highlighted the new IP system’s significance in accelerating the UAE’s transition to a knowledge and innovation-driven economy, as envisioned in the ‘We the UAE 2031’ plan, aiming to position the UAE as a leading hub for the new economy on a global scale.

The new system focuses on enhancing IP rights protection, minimizing violations, resolving disputes, and improving the Ministry’s services for patent registration. Leveraging AI technology, it aims to facilitate the growth of R&D-based projects, foster intellectual property commercialization, and promote national exports in foreign markets.

Furthermore, this strategy is expected to bolster the national IP sector’s revenue, encourage IP investments, and support technology transfer to boost economic growth and global competitiveness.

The UAE stands committed to fostering an ecosystem that prioritizes IP rights protection, creativity, and innovation. This is reinforced by implementing comprehensive economic policies and legislation to protect industrial property rights, trademarks, and copyrights.

Through collaboration with federal and local authorities, the Ministry seeks to implement these initiatives based on international best practices, aiming to propel the UAE higher in the Global Innovation Index rankings.
