As Dubai and the UAE gear up to host COP28, the inauguration of Al Dhafra Solar Power Plant marks a significant milestone in the region’s commitment to sustainable energy. This colossal 2GW solar photovoltaic (PV) installation, situated a mere 35km from the bustling city of Abu Dhabi, is now the world’s largest single-site solar power plant. It boasts the capacity to generate electricity sufficient for nearly 200,000 households, concurrently reducing carbon emissions by 2.4 million tonnes annually.

This solar power behemoth stretches across more than 20 square kilometers of desert terrain and, during its construction climax, it generated approximately 4,500 jobs. It incorporates nearly 4 million solar panels, outfitted with advanced bi-facial technology that captures sunlight on both sides of the panels, optimizing energy production.

The Al Dhafra Solar PV project is a collaborative effort involving top industry players—Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), EDF Renewables, and JinkoPower. Its energy procurement has been adeptly managed by Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).

The project’s unveiling was conducted by Sheikh Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi, highlighting the significance of this development in the context of UAE’s strategic energy diversification and its role in diminishing carbon emissions. His sentiments were echoed by the presence of Lt. General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior.

Sheikh Hazza asserted the UAE’s strategic approach under the guidance of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to bolster energy security through diverse and flexible energy generation sources. He also stressed the importance of these initiatives in fostering economic growth while supporting the global climate action movement.

As we approach COP28, the UAE once again reiterates its leadership in solar energy innovation. Harkening back to 2009 when Masdar activated the nation’s inaugural 10MW solar endeavor, the Al Dhafra Solar PV now represents a venture that is 200-fold in magnitude. The project set a precedent with the lowest tariff globally at its financial closure, showcasing the ambition required globally to navigate towards decarbonization.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, who also chairs Masdar and serves as the COP28 President-Designate, expressed his drive for a unified global push towards augmenting the energy transition. Pointing towards Al Dhafra as a benchmark, he aspires to triple renewables capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.

The UAE has rapidly ascended the ranks in solar energy usage, as evidenced by The Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy, clinching the second spot globally for per capita solar energy use. This swift proliferation of solar infrastructure contributes substantially to the country’s energy diversification plans.

The Al Dhafra Solar PV project’s successful delivery is attributed to the combined expertise of the world’s energy leaders, which engendered a record-breaking low-cost utility-scale solar project. The initial competitive tariff for solar power established at Dh4.97 fils/kWh (1.35 cents/kWh) was later reduced to an even more economical Dh4.85 fils/kWh (1.32 cents/kWh) upon financial completion.

With such developments fostering an environment conducive to technological advancement and economic opportunities, the UAE continues to be at the forefront of renewable energy progress. For job seekers in Dubai and the broader region, the Al Dhafra Solar Project represents not just a hallmark of sustainability but a beacon of burgeoning employment prospects in the green energy sector.
