On a historic day for educators worldwide, a passionate Pakistani teacher was honored with the prestigious Varkey Foundation’s Global Teacher Prize 2023 and its accompanying $1 million award for her remarkable efforts in providing education to underprivileged children. Sister Zeph’s unwavering commitment to education has seen her triumph over adversity, paving the way for teaching excellence despite serious threats and attacks she has faced along her journey.

The Global Teacher Prize is a beacon of recognition for extraordinary teachers, highlighting the significant and transformative role they play in society. Sister Zeph, an educator with a diverse teaching portfolio, was chosen from over 7,000 hopefuls across 130 countries for her specialization in subjects including English, Urdu, and climate change, as well as promoting cultural understanding and interfaith harmony.

Her educational pursuit has not only enlightened thousands of students but has served as an inspiring testament to the deeds of millions of educators globally. UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education, Stefania Giannini, extended her heartfelt congratulations to Sister Zeph for her staunch dedication to the profession, emphasizing how critical it is to cherish and empower teachers as they sculpt our world’s future.

Sunny Varkey, the Founder of the Varkey Foundation, lauded Sister Zeph’s momentous achievement, stating that her incredible story underscores the pivotal role of education in overcoming the pressing challenges we face today and in the days to come.

The Pioneer of Hope: Sister Zeph’s Revolutionary School

At just 13, Sister Zeph’s journey began with a humble act of founding a school within the confines of her home’s courtyard for children unable to afford education. Fueled by her dedication, she balanced an eight-hour workday to finance her school and devoted extra time towards teaching her students, all while pursuing her education during the night.

Now, after 26 years, her modest school has blossomed into an esteemed institution offering free education to over 200 children in a new building. Sister Zeph has emerged as a beacon of hope for underprivileged kids in Pakistan, with many of her pupils progressing to join professional fields and her own education and empowerment foundation.

In her remarkable role, Sister Zeph also provides self-defense classes for girls and aids families in financial distress. Her visionary leadership has also led to the establishment of a vocational center, empowering over 6,000 women with valuable skills in various trades, contributing to societal development.

Dr. Tariq Al Gurg, CEO and Vice-Chairman of Dubai Cares, highlighted the indispensable role of teachers and commended Sister Zeph for her inspirational contribution to reinventing education and for securing her place in history as the Global Teacher Prize 2023 winner.

Looking Ahead: Sister Zeph’s Future Endeavors

Sister Zeph intends to channel the prize funds towards the creation of a new school on a 10-acre plot, designed to offer inclusive education to children from all socio-economic backgrounds. Beyond academics, her vision includes establishing an orphanage and a sustainable food cultivation project, with plans to invite international educators to enrich the lives of her students.

Congratulations to Sister Zeph on her monumental win, and to the other top 10 finalists who represent a diverse spectrum of educational excellence and innovation across the globe.
