As Emirates Airlines celebrates its 38th anniversary, the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, continues to soar to new heights. From a modest beginning with an ambitious directive to lead the aviation sector to becoming the world’s top international carrier, Emirates has indeed achieved that lofty goal.
His Highness’s vision for the airline was always clear: to be the best in the industry or be nothing. This ethos has propelled Emirates to serve over 150 destinations globally, boasting the most extensive fleets of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s and setting the bar for luxury air travel.
The journey of Emirates began in 1984 when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, then Defence Minister, tasked Sir Maurice Flanagan, dnata’s managing director, with the challenge of starting an airline. With a detailed study, a well-crafted business plan, and a clear five-month deadline, Emirates was born on October 25, 1985, with its inaugural flights to Karachi and Mumbai.
Despite the recent travel challenges wrought by the COVID pandemic, Emirates has demonstrated resilience and recovery, reaching new customer peaks in the post-pandemic era. The financial results are a testament to this, with the Emirates Group posting a record profit of Dh10.9 billion for the financial year ending March 31, 2023.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, praised the airline’s contribution to rejuvenating air transport and tourism, highlighting Dubai’s impressive increase in international visitors in 2022. The Group’s significant role in the UAE’s aviation sector—which supports over 770,000 jobs and contributes Dh172.5 billion to the GDP—is undeniable.
In alignment with ongoing progress, Emirates continuously innovates, as seen in its commitment to sustainable aviation fuel, document-free travel experiences, technological advancements for cabin crew, and customer service enhancements through AI.
