The Dubai Sports Council is taking time to reflect on its 2023-24 successes and plans to assess the economic contributions of the sports sector in Dubai. Highlighting the sport sector’s provision of over 105,000 jobs and its $2.5bn contribution to Dubai’s GDP, a detailed economic impact study has been initiated.

Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, expressed gratitude to Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his steadfast support. Sheikh Mansoor celebrated Al Wasl Club’s significant achievements in securing the President’s Cup and ADNOC Professional Football League titles.

An assessment of the economic impact of sporting events in Dubai was set out, acknowledging efforts by government and private sectors in collaboration with the Council to organize such events. Sheikh Mansoor praised investments in sports by various entities, noting contributions to the GDP and job creation.

The sports sector’s GDP contribution has seen consistent growth: from AED6bn ($1.6bn) in 2014 to AED9bn ($2.5bn) in 2022. Sheikh Mansoor directed a fresh study for 2024 to quantify recent economic progress and the influx of businesses involved in sports, bolstered by supportive policies, infrastructure, and golden residency permits.

The meeting also covered the policy to attract and develop talent in Dubai from 2023 through 2033. The 2023-2024 season showcased numerous initiatives drawing over 55,000 youth athletes. Notable events included the Dubai School Games, engaging over 8,500 students from 140 schools in 20 sports disciplines.

Additionally, 14,292 athletes from 263 academies participated in various competitions. Dubai aims to emerge as a major hub for global football clubs, with 11 top academies, such as Real Madrid and AC Milan, setting up bases in the city.

The Council also reviewed the advancement of women’s sports. From 2020-2023, over a million women participated in 926 events spanning 55 sports. The plan aims to expand female athlete participation, secure more international events, and provide training courses.

Sheikh Mansoor praised Dubai clubs for their successful season. With Al Wasl winning twin titles and Shabab Al Ahli claiming multiple titles, the city’s clubs have showcased remarkable sporting excellence.

New stadiums at Al Ruwayyah 3 and Al Jaddaf, each with a capacity of over 20,000 spectators, symbolize Dubai’s commitment to sports. Sheikh Mansoor acknowledged the leadership’s support and emphasized the role of the Council in enhancing team performance and investment in emerging talent.

The meeting also highlighted key achievements in various sports, including Shabab Al Ahli’s volleyball and basketball victories, and Al Nasr’s success in Emirates Cup and Vice President’s Cup. The Dubai International Marine Sports Club’s efforts, particularly the Al Gaffal Dhow Race, were also applauded.

Finally, the world-famous Victory Team’s standout performance in the 2024 UIM F1H2O World Championship, led by Erik Stark, underscores Dubai’s prominence in marine sports on the global stage.
