The UAE government has launched an Unemployment Insurance Scheme to support employees in the country. This scheme provides financial security to workers in case of job loss, offering up to AED60,000 ($16,340) in compensation.

Who Can Benefit from the Scheme?

The scheme is open to all eligible employees in the UAE, including those in the federal government sector and the private sector. However, some categories of employees are exempt from subscribing, including investors, domestic helpers, employees with temporary contracts, juveniles under 18, and retirees who receive a pension and have joined a new job.

Categories and Compensation

The scheme has two categories:

Category A: For employees with a basic salary of AED16,000 or less. The insurance premium is AED5 per month (AED60 annually), and monthly compensation is capped at AED10,000.

Category B: For employees with a basic salary exceeding AED16,000. The insurance premium is AED10 per month (AED120 annually), and monthly compensation is up to AED20,000.

Claiming Compensation

To claim compensation, you must have subscribed to the scheme for at least 12 consecutive months. Submit your claim within 30 days of job loss, and it will be processed within two weeks. The compensation is calculated at 60% of the average basic salary for the last six months before unemployment and is paid for a maximum of three months.
